A paid expert for dow corning-biased. this woman is a front for the plastic surgeons and the chemical cos. who are responsible for the largest cover-up of facts in the history of plastic surgery-the media pr and the cruel slap at sick women and children is disgusting-she also came out against agent orange problems (also a DOW product-if the public ever gets the real story in this silicone disaster it wont be thru drs and health persons like her-she is so tainted by dow et/al money that this book reeks -its smells of corporate cover-up and misinformation-GET THE FACTS ON THIS WOMAN AND HER BACKERS!

Biases Aplenty. For the true story behind implants, one#039s time is better spent reading John Byrne#039s "Informed Consent". He was in charge of Dow#039s "ethics" program and his wife also had implants. Contrary to what Dr. Angell writes in her book, there are many studies showing immunological responses to silicone oils (most recently a study by researchers at the FDA - June 1999). The Institute of Medicine in their recent report termed the FDA study "interesting", choosing to rely on previous, and seriously flawed, studies purporting to show no link between silicone and disease (the same studies quoted in Dr. Angell#039s book). One of the studies looked at women who had implants for only one month (!), which is as ludicrous as determing smoking doesn#039t cause cancer after studying a person who smoked for only a brief time. There are thousands of court documents proving fraud on the part of the implant manufacturers. Reading through them makes one realize how powerful corporations are and how the bottom line is far more important than the health and safety of the consumer. Breast implants (saline and silicone) have NEVER been approved for safety by the FDA. They only have pre-market approval, which means they can be on the market pending the manufacturers submission of safety data. To date, the manufacturers have been UNABLE to prove implants safe. Unfortunately, the medical community and the corporate community are oftentimes inextricably intertwined. Money is the motivator. When Dr. Angell speaks of greed, I#039m sure that#039s at least one thing she knows a lot about.

Waste of time and money. This book is a waste of time to read and a waste of money. The author spends far more time telling the reader what to think rather than giving the reader facts on which to base an opinion. She has the credentials to evaluate the studies, but why her opinion on the legal system, the media, and her un-critical, unthinking total dismissal of a wide range of groups (humanists, feminists, environmentalists, ecologists, proponents of alternative medicine) is laughable. (She does point out in one sentence that not all members of these groups reject science, but you#039d never guess that from the remaining discussion). For example, she goes from "In their [humanists] view, the deference to science that has characterized intellectual life for much of this century has contributed to a devaluation of humanist thought and the emergence of a callous, technology-enthralled society." In the very next sentence, she says "in rejectiong the uses to which science has been put..." What Because humanists see problems arising from "deference to science" they are "rejecting the uses to which science has been put" So since Angell is questioning the legal system#039s use of medical evidence, I can conclude she is rejecting all aspects of the legal system

In short, there is little in this book worth reading certainly the title of the book is misleading. A more apt title would be "What Angell Thinks about Americans, the media, and the legal system."

Lawsuits outrun science. All about how a few women and several lawyers got rich off lawsuits against the companies making breast implants, forcing some of those companies out of business. The lawsuits were based on bad or non-existing science. This is a sad indictment of the inadequacies of the allowing lawyers to profit outrageously from class action suits, and allowing so-called experts to testify in court, even when real science disproves what they are saying.
But the reading did get a little dry in places.

Finally, a rational argument!. People have a tendency to let their emotions rule their mind, or in this case, their breasts. Luckily, this book chooses the mind.

Science on Trial: The Clash of Medical Evidence and the Law in the Breast Implant Case
In the early 1990s, sympathetic juries awarded huge damages to women claiming injury from silicone breast implants, leading to a $4.25 billion class-action settlement that still wasn#039t large enough to cover all the claims. Shockingly, rigorous scientific studies of breast implants have now shown that there is no significant link between breast implants and disease. Why were the courts and the public so certain that breast implants were dangerous when medical researchers were not The answer to this question reveals important differences in the way science, the law, and the public regard evidence-and not just in the breast implant controversy. Introduced in 1962, silicone breast implants had been used by between one and two million women by the time they were virtually banned in 1992 by David A. Kessler of the Food and Drug Administration. While the ban came about because manufacturers had failed to demonstrate the safety of the devices, Marcia Angell, executive editor of The New England Journal of Medicine, argues that there actually was no medical consensus to support the contention that implants could cause widespread illness. Science on Trial examines the silicone debate and argues for the reliance on scientific evidence "to curb the greed, fear and self-indulgence" of such disputes.

A Must-Have for Anyone Considering B.A.. I purchased and read the first version of this book nearly ten years ago when I was considering augmentation and was impressed at the level of detail. So when I decided earlier this year to look into breast augmentation once again, I immediately got on amazon.com to see if there was an updated version of the book. I was excited to read just how much the procedure and choices had improved in a decade. The book is an invaluable reference tool for any woman considering breast augmentation. It addresses nearly every issue a woman should consider from choosing a surgeon to incision sites to implant options and more. The book is full of detail, but it is laid out in a way that makes it very reader friendly. I was so impressed with the book that I ultimately ended up choosing Dr. Tebbetts as my surgeon. I am one very satisfied customer (of the book, to which I continue to use as a reference post-operatively) and an even more satisfied patient. I cannot stress enough how helpful this book is for educating oneself about breast augmentation.

Even if you#039ve done your homework, you#039ll still learn from this book. It#039s well-laid out to find what you need quick and lots of diagrams to help you understand sizing and implant options.

If you ever had questions about implants...this is the book to read!. I#039m so glad that I took the time to read this book!! I went into my consultation with Dr. Tebbetts so well prepared. If there is any question you have ever had about breast augmentation, this is the place to find the answers. Everything you could ever need to know about this procedure is in this book!!! It will help you look at all sides of the question of whether this is the right procedure for you, if it will give you what you are expecting it to give you, and what to expect from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book to anyone considering breast augmentation!

Dr. Teitelbaum. I am a plastic surgeon who does a lot of breast augmentation, so it is with some authority that I can say that Dr. Tebbetts has contributed more to breast augmentation than any other plastic surgeon in the world. Do a search for scientific articles on breast augmentation, and his name comes up more than all other plastic surgeons combined!

In The Best Breast 2, he distills and translates those articles into understandable English for patients. I ask all of my patients to read it before their consultation.

They say it is a quick read and easy to understand. They all comment that the book is organized intuitively, with important subjects written in bold. Though it has a lot of information, the prose is succinct and can be read quickly. At times it seems repetitive, but I suppose that is necessary so that the chapters can be read independently of one another. Also, the repeated information is critical for patients to know, so it is probably good that certain points are emphasized.

When patients read it before their consultation, the visit is very sophisticated and highly productive. The Best Breast 2 fully informs them about each of the choices that they will need to make about their surgery. I am thrilled when I do a consultation with someone who has read The Best Breast, as we can have a discussion on a very high level, and spend our time discussing the important subjects as well as subtle nuances that are possible with the surgery. I don#039t have to waste everyone#039s time correcting common misunderstandings, and the patients know the important issues upon which to focus, the critical decision they have to make, and always ask the most insightful questions.

These patients make better decisions about their surgery. Better decisions means a better operation, less pain, faster recovery, and a better likelihood of having the long-term result that they wanted.

No book or website holds a candle to the quality and presentation of the material in The Best Breast 2.

If "All philosophy is a footnote to Plato," and "All psychology is a footnote to Freud," then "All that is known about breast augmentation is a footnote to Tebbetts." Let the doctors peruse his original scientific papers, but if you read The Best Breast 2, you#039ll understand breast augmentation better than 99% of plastic surgeons.



A Must Read. This book is a must read for any woman considering breast augmentation. It addresses every step of the process, from who should consider breast augmentation to how to choose a surgeon to how to tell if you are having complications. Dr. Tebbett#039s methods prove that you don#039t have to use tight bandages, drains, and special bras to achieve great results. I never knew a gentler type of breast augmentation existed until I read this book. I actually ended up using Dr. Tebbett#039s for my surgery and found out for myself the truth behind all of his claims in the book. No woman should consider her breast augmentation research complete until she#039s read The Best Breast 2.

However, customers should be aware that this is not a manual for glamour photography, nor is it a pictorial of nude women as its cover might imply. The author#039s work is not augmented by photos or illustrations of any kind.

Excellant book. Having been diagnosed with breast cancer this book was recommended to me by another friend who had breast cancer. This is the most thorough and informational book on this subject. I would highly recommend to any
woman diagnosed with breast cancer. Easy to understand and covers absolutely everything you would not think of on your own.

Great comprehensive book. This book was handed to me by a friend a few days after my diagnosis four years ago. I still refer to it from time to time, and always send it to friends when they are newly diagnosed.

It#039s comprehensive, straightforward, and not alarmist. Though it has personal stories in it, it is not sentimental or preachy.

It sets the right tone for a disease that is scary, but definitely survivable.



Living Through Breast Cancer. I also purchased this book the day after being diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. I remember how nervous I was bringing this to the counter at the book store. I wanted something that would walk me #039through#039 breast cancer not just survive it.

This book is excellent and covers what all those websites cover in easy to understand terms with hope not doom and gloom.

I suggest this to all who are diagnosed or who have a friend facing this journery.

Best resource for breast cancer. There are several books and dozens of web-sites with information and guidance for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. This is, by far, the best that I#039ve seen. It is written in a way that is easily accessible and full of great information and data. I highly recommend this as a resource for both the cancer patient and anyone interested in the subject.
